My large-scale works—cracked concrete slabs mounted on the wall—resemble the faded remnants of ancient frescoes, their weathered surfaces evoking the historical scars of the 20th century. These slabs serve as visual metaphors for the cycles of destruction, decay, and rebirth that have shaped modern history. At first glance, they reflect the deterioration I witnessed in the urban landscape of my former home, St. Petersburg. But for me, they go beyond simply portraying decay—they are visual aides-mémoires, offering a window into my internalized landscape shaped by the experience of emigration.
